Legislative Hall Fire

Thursday, July 14, 2016

On October 7, 2015 at 1417 hours the Dover Fire Department was alerted for report of a working building fire located at 411 Legislative Ave., Legislative Hall. Chief Mark Hall was first on location and reported a three story government building with smoke showing. Capitol Police was already on scene and their officers were evacuating occupants upon arrival. Chief Hall established command and advised dispatch to fill the box alarm assignment for that quadrant of the city. Ladder 1 arrived on location and they were directed to the basement area with a 1-3/4” handline, where the fire was reported by construction crews on scene. The power had already been cut to the north end of the building prior to FD arrival. Engine 3 was next on location and they were directed to take a 300’ 1-3/4” handline to the second floor, where it was reported that a room was on fire as well. Both crews located the fires quickly and extinguished same. Engine 6 arrived on location and they were directed to make access to the attic area to check for extension. Ladder 2 and Rescue 1 arrived and their crews assisted on checking for extension and performed a primary and secondary search. E54-4’s crew took a third handline through the “A” side door and began searching the building as well. E54-5 and Ladder 54 along with crews from Tower 41 arrived and were directed to make access to the roof and check it for extension. Tower 41 reported minor extension all the way up to the roof level. Overhaul was performed by their crew on the roof and attic area. All crews worked aggressively in stopping the fire from spreading further throughout the building and all worked together to ensure the safety of each other. The scene was placed under control and turned over to the City FM for investigation. Fire, smoke, and water damage was prevalent throughout the north side of the building, with the entire building being affected by the smoke.
