Working Building Fire

Monday, February 18, 2019

On February 17, 2019 at 1628, the DFD was alerted for a possible building fire in the Chatham Cove development. The Duty Officer, Asst. Chief Ben Smetana, was first on scene to find a middle of the row townhouse with a smoke condition on the second floor. E5 arrived on scene, secured a water source and advanced a 1-3/4” attach line to the second floor. Crews encountered a fire condition in the bedroom and bathroom area with extension up into the loft. As additional resources arrived on scene, the building was laddered, the roof was opened and the adjacent structures were searched for fire spread. An additional handline was also placed into service. Primary and secondary searches were completed with negative findings. Crews remained on scene for more than two hours performing overhaul. No injuries were encountered and one individual was displaced. The scene was turned over to the Dover Fire Marshal for investigation. Mutual aid units responded from the Little Creek VFC and Camden-Wyoming VFC (out at Little Creek for training at the time of the alarm). EMS standby was provided by the Kent County Paramedics and PrimeCare. Cheswold VFC and Little Creek VFC provided a station cover-up during the operation.
