HazMat Leak

On March 11, 2014 at 0923 the Dover Fire Department was alerted for an automatic alarm at the Food Lion located at 1030 Forrest Ave. L1, under the direction of Asst Chief Hall was the first unit on scene to find a single-story grocery store located in a strip mall. Employees on scene advised there was a compressor on fire within the store. Crews investigated the interior and found what looked to be a smoke condition inside the store. Upon further investigation, it was discovered to be a difluoromonochloromethane leak coming from a compressor. Chief Carey arrived on scene and assumed Command. Level 3 accountability was established and an entry point was set up on the “C” side of the structure. Chief Carey requested a DNREC response due to the HazMat leak. DNREC arrived on scene and assisted units in securing power to the compressor and stopping the leak. A BLS unit was dispatched to attend to two employees who had eye irritation. The Department of Health was also contacted. The scene was placed under control and turned over to DNREC.
