Heavy Entrappment on Hazlettville Rd.
August, 20 2017

On August 20, 2017 at 2140, the DFD was alerted for a motor vehicle collision with reported subjects trapped in the 3800 block of Hazelettville Rd. E2 and the Duty, Officer Michael O'Connor, were first on scene to find a full-sized Nissan pickup truck into the side of a 53' trailer that was backing into a driveway. The driver of the pick-up was heavily entrapped. The pick-up was wedged under the trailer almost to the "B post, mid-trailer. The vehicle was stabilized and extrication began. ALS and BLS gained access as best they could to start rendering care. The trailer was secured and the tractor was disconnected and moved forward. The trailer was raised to relieve pressure on the pick-up. Crews began to remove the roof from the pickup truck. After several minutes, it was determined that the vehicle would have to be winched out from under the truck to complete extrication. Once crews freed the trailer from the pick-up truck and determined it was safe, the pick-up truck was winched away from the trailer. Once free from the trailer, crews worked another 12 minutes to free the subject from the vehicle after a dash roll was performed. The subject was taken to the ambulance where he was further evaluated by ALS and the Trooper Medic. He was packaged for flight and taken to the LZ. The subject was transferred to Trooper 4 who initiated transport to CER. The scene was rendered safe and turned over to DSP for investigation. Due to the extended scene time, crews from Cheswold and Little Creek were brought into the City to backfill our units. Many thanks to them.
