Thursday, July 2, 2015

On June 10, 2012, at 1343, the Dover Fire Department was dispatched to a reported serious MVC rollover with subjects ejected in the north bound lanes of SR-1, possibly by mile marker 59. E4, under the direction of Asst. Chief Michael O’Connor was first on scene in the south bound lane of SR-1, adjacent to the accident scene in the north bound lane. The crew encountered a single mini-van on its passenger side on the east side of the roadway. There were multiple patients in various stages on the side of the road. Some walking wounded, some laying supine in the grass. After assessing the situation, a Level 1 MVC was declared. R-1 arrived on scene and along with E4's crew began to triage/treat the multiple patients. ALS arrived on scene and was advised they had a possibility of upwards of eight patients with two priority 1 children. The Fire Chief arrived on scene and secured a LZ for both inbound aviation units. Additional BLS units were requested. ALS completed the triage portion of the incident and determined transport priorities. As patients were packaged and readied, they were placed in the waiting BLS units with no delays in transport. Aviation arrived on scene (both units) and were utilized. All patients were prepped and transported with 30 minutes of the first unit’s arrival. A total of 12 patients ended up being transported from the scene by either ground or aviation units to two Trauma Centers. The scene was placed under control and turned over to the Delaware State Police. The northbound lane of SR-1 was shutdown at Exit 95 for an extended period of time while the scene was investigated. There were several off-duty Nurses and EMS providers traveling SR-1 at the time of the accident and assisted with this incident, for that, we thank them.
