Fatal Motel Fire - Super Lodge

Thursday, July 2, 2015

On February 16, 2013, the Dover Fire Department was dispatched for a smell of smoke at 246 N. Dupont Hwy, the Super Lodge Motel. It was reported that the occupant of the room in question required medicinal oxygen so BLS/ALS were dispatched as well. Dover BLS unit A-63 arrived on scene and reported a smoke condition coming from the Motel. Chief West arrived on scene within moments and found a single story, middle of the row, Motel unit with heavy fire showing and fire impingement on the “B” and “D” exposure units. E6 arrived on scene, established a water supply and advanced a 1-3/4” attack line into the fire unit. E7 arrived on scene and was directed to advance a second attack line and assist with fire suppression. L1 and E41-1 arrived on scene and opened the roof. Engine crews experienced heavy fire conditions and rupturing oxygen cylinders, but a quick knock down of the fire was accomplished. While conducting a search in the fire room during suppression efforts, a victim was found. Unfortunately, the occupant had succumbed from the fire and was pronounced dead on scene by ALS. Crews remained on scene and performed extensive overhaul and assisted the FMO. One civilian was transported to the local trauma center for smoke inhalation. Approximately 14 occupants were displaced by the fire, most of which were able to be relocated within the motel not affected by the fire. The scene is under investigation by the City and State FMO.
