YMCA HazMat

On June 5, 2014 at 1139, the Dover Fire Department was alerted for a hazmat incident at the YMCA located at 1137 S. State Street. Asst Chief Carey was first to arrive on scene. Maintenance personnel advised him that chlorine was inadvertently transferred into a tank of muriatic acid. Due to a possible adverse reaction, the DNREC Hazmat Team was dispatched. All occupants within the business were evacuated and the area was secured. The Kent County Hazardous Response Unit (Decon 3) was also dispatched to provide decon of the Hazmat team. DNREC personnel entered the building in Level 1 protective suits and made their way to the basement where the chemicals were stored. After assessment, it was determined that there was no action required and the chemicals did not present an immediate threat. The chemicals were removed under the supervision of DNREC personnel. After several hours, all units were able to clear.
