CO Alarm Activation

Thursday, July 2, 2015

On January 1, 2015 at 1129 hours the Dover Fire Department was alerted for a CO alarm activation at 1300 S. Farmview Ave, the Woodmill Apts. Duty Officer Asst. Chief Glenn Whitt was dispatched to investigate. Upon arrival, Asst. Chief Whitt made contact with the subject. The multi-gas meter alerted immediately upon entering the apartment. The subject was told to leave the residence and Asst. Chief Whitt called for a general alarm. Units arrived on scene and began to investigate for the cause of the leak. Meters began to alert in the hallways and stairwells and it was determined the entire “A” building would have to be evacuated as a precautionary measure. Crews assisted in evacuation and clearing each apartment. Chesapeake Utilities gas company arrived on scene and assisted in determining the cause of the CO leak. All the heaters in the complex were turned off until a clear source was found. It was later determined that the exhaust in the apartment where the call originated from was 95% blocked. After all apartments were deemed safe, the residents were allowed to re-enter. The occupant of the originating apartment was transported to the local Trauma Center for evaluation due to symptoms of CO poisoning. The scene was turned over to FM1 for investigation
