On 06/06/10 at 0643 hrs, the Dover Fire Department was dispatched to 904 Woodcrest Drive for a working building fire with possible subjects trapped. Car 2 under the Command of Assistant Chief West called for a second alarm to be struck as he approached Walker Road an saw a thick column of smoke in the air. Dispatch advised Car 2 that Dover Police were on location confirming a working alarm and subjects trapped in the building. Upon arrival Command found a three story garden style apartment with heavy smoke and fire from the 2nd and 3rd floors, extending into the roof as well as an occupant jumping from a 2nd floor window. Dover E2 was the first apparatus on scene and attempted to make an interior attack on the “Alpha” side stairway. Crew's encountered heavy fire conditions extending from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor and roof division of the building. E2’s crew advised Command they had a partial collapse of the interior stairwell from floor 1 to floor 2. Command advised Dispatch to sound the evacuation tones. Accountability was complete and an exterior attack was continued. Several hand-lines and four master streams were utilized to bring the fire under control. Crews performed primary and secondary searches of the complex. Unfortunately, crew's found one victim who had succumbed to the fire. Seven patients were transported to area hospitals. Two firefighters and one Dover Police Officer were injured on scene but were not transported. At 0855 the fire was placed under control and crews remained on scene for several more hours performing overhaul. The Dover Fire Department would like to extend a most sincere thanks to the Dover Police Department and many apartment complex residents. Without their assistance and quick reactions that morning, the outcome may have been much worse. We would also like to thank the surrounding Departments who either came to the scene or provided cover-up services.
